We all know that it’s important to drive efficiently, not just because it saves money and gasoline, but because it can also cut down on your personal emissions while driving, making it good practice for both your wallet and the environment. Now, what if your car could do more than simply telling you when you’re driving efficiently and when you’re not? What if it could teach you to be a more efficient driver, without you really knowing it? Well, if your car is a Ford Fusion Hybrid, it already is. Check out the video below to see how.
When designing the efficiency meter on the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford’s engineers wanted a system that would engage drivers’ sense of fun in order to reinforce efficient driving behaviors. They achieved this by creating the Efficiency Leaves, a digital cluster of foliage that blooms and grows the more efficiently you’re driving, and it wilts under less efficient driving conditions. Ford hopes that the interactive nature of the meter, which is housed in the instrument cluster, will serve as a psychological “reward” for efficient driving, as well as a psychological deterrent to inefficient driving. After all, when you drive more efficiently, you’re not the only one who benefits—we all do.
